full moon and catch rates

Do you catch more carp during a full moon phase. Does it have an affect on your fishing.

Ive never done any good on a Full Moon so dont bother. I can remember my first two visits to Lac Chateau Cavagnac were just about fishless , and realised they were both weeks that fell on a Full Moon . The Last two visits were booked when The Moon Was at its Darkest , and we had a lot more Fish. It was always the same when fishing Wyndhams here.

hi, the moon is a strange object, its a dead planet but causes our sea tides to rise and fall, 22ft in some places, and as we humans are made up of water among other things, it must have an effect on us. Twisted Evil

As for carp who knows?

I have mixed views on full moons, IE full moon and a clear night I tend to struggle scratch but if there is a full moon and it is cloudy and overcast I have had some good results cheers .

A couple of years back I cross-referenced my sessions (average x2 per week) with the Moonstrike charts to see if there was any correlation to the anticipated 'hot' dates from Moonstrike.

Personally, for me, there was no obvious parallel.

Personally I've never given too much credit to the moonphase, I've not seen anything in my catch rate pattern to suggest it makes a jot of difference.

I've never done well on a full moon. I have the app on my phone to tell me when are the "best" times and full moon is one of those times!!!
I always keep an eye on it just out of interest but I'm not blindly guided by it.

Last year i cross referenced -where i could find them - the dates of the British record captures with the nearest full moon.

There was one hit and that fish was caught twice in the space of week suggesting it was simply very hungry pig

If there was some pattern wouldn't it be obvious from this data?

26/09/1902 - Common 17lb 8oz - Croxby Pond - Otto Overbeck
17/09/1902 - Full Moon

06/09/1916 - Mirror 20lb 3oz - Cheshunt Reservoir - John Andrews
11/09/1916 - Full Moon

14/08/1926 - Mirror 21lb 10oz - Warren Pond by A.E.Wyatt
23/08/1926 - Full Moon

24/07/1930 - Mirror 26lb - Mapperley Reservoir - Albert Buckley
10/07/1930 - Full Moon

03/10/1951 - Mirror 31lb 4oz - Redmire Pool - Bob Richards
15/10/1951 - Full Moon

13/09/1952 - "Clarissa" - Common 44lb - Redmire Pool - Richard Walker
04/09/1952 - Full Moon

16/06/1980 - "The Bishop" - Mirror Carp 51lb 8oz - Redmire Pool - Chris Yates
20/06/1980 - Full Moon

13/06/1995 - "The Scaley One" Mirror 53lb 15oz - Mid Northants - Roddy Porter
13/06/1995 - Full Moon

20/06/1995 - "The Scaley One" Mirror 55lb 6oz - Mid Northants - Alex White Full
13/06/1995 - Full Moon

If anyone has any other dates of later record captures may be you could add them to the list.

You can get the moon phase for the date here

eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/phase/phasecat.html

And nice forum btw Very Happy

Re: full moon and catch rates

Post by Waterways on Wed Aug 22, 2012 10:14 am

I've always been lead to believe that the best times for fishing were either side of a full moon rather than actually on it, so either a waxing or waning moon? I've never taken much interest in it though so really don't know if either of them is supposed to be better than the other...

And while I can't say I've ever noticed a pattern in my catches, I guess it cant hurt to take an interest in it? Got a good mate who definitely takes it into account, and the moon affects lots of things on our planet including humans and other animals so why not fish... Interesting topic.

I have no idea from my own results if moon phases effect a carps feeding patterns but Derek Amies wrote about the effect he thinks it has on pike in his book "Pike Fishing On The Norfolk Broads" . He believes its a very important factor and for those interested a read of the very in-depth chapter he has given over to the moon may be of benefit. The moon will have the same physical effect for carp as it does pike and his theory , he claims, holds for all fish be it "Tope in the sea - pike in freshwater- all fish". Im now off to read it again as the opening post has set me off thinking lol thats dangerous for a start !

I can't time my fishing trips with the moon phases so wouldn't know what if any had been more successful.

I tend to try and find the fish and feed them and sometimes they eat the wrong one and sometimes they don't.

I fished last night (almost a full moon) and had no action. Didn't hear any alarms around the lake either, so I'm guessing everyone had a fish free night.

I believe there's more to the moon's influence in general than meets the eye.
If you look at how the moon affects what fish eat as opposed to the fish themselves then I believe you might be on the right track.
Natural blooms, hatches, changes in weather patterns and therefore pressure and temperature make for a complex pattern but I think it's worth considering.
Especially if your time on the bank is limited.
