Post by Wal85 on Thu Aug 16, 2012 2:44 pm

Afternoon

I'm in the market for a digital slr, I got a budget of £400. What do people recommend?
Thanks in advance

Do you have any lenses? Or is it start from scratch?

Then the choice will usually boil down between Canon, Nikon or Sony.

Canon and nikon lenses are usually more available second hand as they have bigger user groups. My personal preference is Canon.

You're probably looking at a Canon 1100D or a NIKON D3100

I agree, online you'll be able to learn just about everything through video tutorials which for me are a lot easier to take in than reading from a book.
I also subscribed to a couple of dslr magazines which came with a different tutorial DVD every month covering all sorts of photography subjects including basic photoshop processing.

I went out on Tuesday around London to have a look at a new SLR, I didn't have anything in mind other than I would prefer a Nikon. After visiting a few shops and seeing what was on offer I decided to stay with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28, 18x Optical zoom hybrid camera. More automatic functions you can shake a stick at as well as variable manual modes as well. I just couldn't find anything to beat it. It's also almost half the size of a SLR. Not sure of the price but at a guess I think it was about £300 but if you look on ebay a 12.1 Mega pixel model with 18x zoom is going for £140. Cheap as chips considering what you get for your money.

Second hand Nikon d80. Check out amazon to find some for sale. Much more solid feel than the entry level dslrs.
