What is a Big Perch ?

Post by Bob on Sat Sep 22, 2012 3:58 pm

It took me years (50 to be precise) to catch a Perch over 4lbs by design and then I start reading the New Perch Fishers book and they reckon a Big Specimen is now a Perch over 4lbs 8ozs ?

I'm not saying this is wrong, but I wonder if there are a small number of waters producing a large number of really Big Perch and this sort of clouds the issues ?

I know on the Lea I caught a number of Big Perch with very distinctive markings, which appeared in the various publications at over 4lbs, but were actually Big 3s !!

Could it be wishful thinking or dodgy weighing that gives a false impression that every where you fish has lots of 4lb Perch ?

for me a 3lb fish from around here is a big fish. nationaly 4lb + like you thought bob.

some water's/river systems big three's are like getting a 6lb chub round here. i'd go with your view. 4lb + is big! 5lb + is out of this world.

Had my first dedicated Perch Trip to the Lea today, a 1lbder, a 2.2 and a 2.4.

All the takes came in an hour, just before dusk, I love Perch Fishing !!

I've set myself a target of catching a big perch before the year is out, my biggest perch is about 1 1/2lb from when I was a kid, been having a bash with a spinner on the river to no avail, is river perching very productive with spinners this time of year? I'm guessing better off with some worms or some minnows

My biggest is 2lb 9oz and I would love to get one bigger. The plain truth is that I don't invest enough time into it and that's a shame. Every year, I plan to target perch and never get round to it for one reason or another.
I must do it this autumn! There is no fish as impressive as a big perch in my eyes. I'd have a 5lb perch over a 50lb carp.

found the little rubber shad type lures the best if your wanting to keep active john, had 3x 3lbers in 3 consecutive casts last year with 1,i think light levels are the biggest factors for when big perch hunt.
there will be some real big ones in that marina Idea
