When do you start ?

Post by Stoney on Sun Sep 09, 2012 12:30 pm

When do you start to get the urge to go Pike Fishing, is it when the day's start to draw in or is it when the mornings begin to feel chilly and the trees to take on their winter colour's ?

I get the urge through the whole season!

But Piking "Proper" is only really started when the weather starts to turn, first frosts usually, but sometimes earlier if its a wet Autumn.
I will lure and fly fish at any time of the season though in acceptable conditions (Well oxygenated water e.t.c.) where in my experience I beleive it won't put the fish under more stress than is fair. I don't see anything wrong with an experienced, considerate angler fishing for Pike outside the traditional winter period.
I voiced this opinion on the Cemex Predator forum and got bashed for it though, so I already have my tin hat on typing this... pirat

Flung a couple of little deads around on the weekend to try out a new toy (Interline rod that turned out to be The Perfect sink and draw tool) and had 4 jacks and lost one, great fun and the fish were in the margin, head gripped and back before they knew what was happening!

When the hard frosts arrive, rendeer as it seems more natural, three pike rods out, dead mackerel, on bottom of lake, and a ping on the alarm, magic Laughing

Oh you lucky, lucky man. It's rare to find a water these days with decent fish in, that isn't known to have some "Form" for Pike already.

Keep the place close to your chest mate, but keep us posted!

hi mate,i wouldn't advise eating the big ones, the big old girls will be a bit tough,i once had a mid 20 deep hoooked, there was no way she would survive so i took her home for tea/breakfast/dinner 'waste not want not' was real tough earthy meat.
if your going to have one for food then take a small jack, 2-3 lb is ideal, good eating.
